for more information on Vodou/why its portrayal in Princess and the Frog is problematic/how it has been stereotyped in society (and why no, it’s not okay in this movie just because Mama Odie was a good person,) go here or even more, here
Guh, fuck you, too. It’s a fucking children’s movie.Edit: There’s also a lot of truth in a lot of stereotypes. So, yeah. There’s that. Still, gtfover it, it’s a fucking cartoon.“There’s also a lot of truth in a lot of stereotypes”
I literally can’t get over the fact that this was edited in to be a part of the statement above hahaha… I mean, that’s just a sad, but funny because it is sad, thing to add. So rather than looking up the real history (and associated prejudices and how they are inaccurate and misrepresent a rich and vibrant aspect of African-> Haitian culture) of Vodou, the poster decided to just be like “it’s a stereotype so some part of it must be accurate”???
It’s too early in the day for this sort of mind blowing situation. The fact that anyone would buy into the idea that the stereotype must be true- because of cartoons they’ve seen, as further shown in one of the links above which are very easy to click- only serves as an obvious example that cartoons are not “just” cartoons and can influence the way you interpret the world.
No, but really. It’s a children’s movie. Who cares what false information is in it. When children watch Sleeping Beauty they don’t believe in dragons years later. And even if they continue on believing in something from an animation how are you to say what is right and wrong in it? Do you want to edit it until it is completely politically correct? Put your own ideologies in it perhaps? Eviscerating a children’s movie because you know what is right and wrong makes you no better then those who created the movie. Sorry, but there is no perfect world in the future. People will always get facts wrong, stereotype, discriminate, and be prejudice. It’s how humans act, and will forever act.
I’m not really sure why I’m going to entertain this argument. I think you answered your own question here. Who cares what’s in children’s movies? We all should. It is possible to teach children without relying on offensive racial and ethnic stereotypes. Equating stereotypes with dragons does not add up. Children eventually will realize dragons don’t exist. It takes much longer for them to realize that the stereotype isn’t true, if they ever do. I don’t believe there needs to be a decision about right and wrong here. Using offensive stereotypes hurts people. That’s all I need to know to determine that this is wrong. Ideologies are used to hide the truth and make the status quo seem normal. This could be seen as maintaining an ideology. To remove this material and become “political correct” would be the opposite of ideology. You are correct, there is no perfect world. As you said people will get facts wrong, discriminate, stereotype, and be prejudiced. It’s an unfortunate reality. Unfortunately the children who are watching these movies have no developed critical thinking skills yet, but we have. We have the knowledge and the power to realize that these kinds of things hurt people and perpetuate misinformation and the only way to fix it is so think critically and demand better. Those awful things may still exist in society, but we can try to teach each child that a good human being treats other human beings with respect and dignity. That stereotyping, discrimination, and prejudice is wrong and does not make them a good person. We criticize because we demand better from Disney. They have power over children and we want that power to be used to make the world better, not worse.
